Tzigane

The piece is inspired by popular, gypsy music and every harpist is very familiar with this piece, which contains one of the most difficult cadenzas often requested in auditions. The original was for violin and piano, the latter with the addition of an accessory called a luthéal, which allowed different timbral registers to be changed by activating stops above the keyboard. In this way, the sound seemed almost percussive, plucked. This accessory later fell into disuse and Ravel’s grand orchestration for violin and orchestra is now the most performed. In this very transcription, Ravel also adds the harp with great compositional skill. What if the violin together with the harp could be the two gypsies?

The great chromaticity of the piece and its virtuosity (not only on the part of the violin!) make it a great challenge. Therefore, I transcribed the score starting from the quality of sound that Ravel could have imagined, without neglecting a simplification of positions that would make the performance easier.
